Student Leadership and Success Studies
Course Instruction: Student Leadership and Success Studies – Utah Valley University
Role: Instructor (Multiple Semesters)
As a multi-semester instructor for Student Leadership and Success Studies, I taught a foundational course designed to support incoming and academically at-risk students—particularly those lacking academic preparation, social capital, or self-confidence in the university environment.
The course emphasized both academic and personal development, with a curriculum that included:
Academic and study skills (e.g., test-taking, memorization, time management)
Stress management and financial literacy
Social integration and communication skills
Diversity, inclusion, and Title IX awareness
Goal setting and lifelong learning strategies
My approach blended practical tools with reflective exercises, empowering students to build not only competency but confidence. I prioritized inclusive pedagogy, culturally responsive examples, and real-world application to foster a sense of belonging and purpose.
Across all semesters taught, I received near-perfect Student Rating of Instruction (SRI) scores, reflecting high student satisfaction and perceived course value. The course contributed directly to retention and engagement efforts by helping students build the mindset, skills, and community connections necessary for long-term success.
7-Habits of Highly Effective People
Role: Instructor & Facilitator (Online, Asynchronous)
I taught multiple sections of an online asynchronous course designed for students pursuing a Leadership Certificate, focused on Stephen R. Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. The course aimed to foster personal leadership and self-management through structured reflection and application of each habit.
Topics covered included:
Understanding paradigms and personal responsibility
Habit development: Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First
Interpersonal effectiveness: Think Win-Win, Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood, Synergize
Personal renewal: Sharpen the Saw
As the course instructor and facilitator, I guided students in applying the habits to their academic, professional, and personal lives. I emphasized critical thinking, self-awareness, and peer engagement through discussions, reflective assignments, and habit tracking.
I consistently received near-perfect Student Rating of Instruction (SRI) scores, reflecting strong student satisfaction and impactful learning outcomes.
Advanced Mentorship
Role: Instructor & Mentor Coach
As the final preparatory course for students seeking to become official UVU student mentors, Advanced Mentorship focused on developing advanced interpersonal and facilitation skills critical for effective peer support.
In this course, I guided students through the foundations and applications of:
Types of mentorship (professional, social, and personal)
Small group dynamics and relationship-building strategies
Practical techniques for leading and managing group discussions
Creating meaningful connections with diverse student populations
The course combined theory with applied practice to ensure students could confidently support others both one-on-one and in group settings. It served as a gateway to the formal UVU mentorship program, equipping students with the tools, mindset, and emotional intelligence necessary to lead with empathy and effectiveness.
The class was met with strong positive feedback, and student evaluations reflected high engagement, readiness, and enthusiasm for entering the mentorship role.
